Cingular Wireless recently started selling a GSM version of the Treo 650 while palmOne began offering an "unlocked" version of the smartphone. palmOne's unlocked Treo 650 allows the device to be used with almost all of the GSM carriers around the world. For this reason, unlocked phones are always viewed as more valuable by consumers.
Wednesday, the unlocked Treo 650 sold for $600, just $50 more than Cingular's "locked" version. Today the unlocked model costs $700.
What happened? palmOne says the original price was an error but many are skeptical. Many people feel the price increase was done in response to complaints by Cingular, as they felt more people would purchase the unlocked edition. There is no evidence that Cingular put pressure on palmOne. All we know is that the price change was abrupt.
palmOne says it will honor the $600 price for those who've already ordered the unlocked Treo 650.
