The new CEO of HP has given a sit down interview with CRN that covers quite a bit of ground. The subject of webOS came up and Whitman says HP will be behind the OS in a "big way." BlackBerry use continues to grow in government

Although RIM has seen a sharp decline in market share among US consumers, the government sector is another story. BlackBerry has seen consistent growth among government users. The growth isn't huge, and RIM hasn't given specific numbers, but growth is said to be steady.

Dropbox is running a promotion to encourage people to try the beta version of Dropbox for Android. The new version's biggest feature is automatic uploading of pictures and video. If you don't care about privacy, you can have all of the pictures and video you take on your Android device automatically uploaded to your Dropbox account. RIM is trying to build their collection of Android apps that will run on the BlackBerry PlayBook. To help get developers rolling, the company is offering a free PlayBook to any Android Developer who repackages their Android app, and submits it to the BlackBerry App World by February 13.
The promotion was announced on Twitter by Alec Saunders, VP of developer relations.

Microsoft makes "Gmail Man" video public in response to Google's Privacy Policy change

This video isn't new, but it's new to the public. Microsoft made this video last year but it was used internally for its internal Global Exchange sales conference last July. In light of the recent change to Google's privacy policy, Microsoft has not only taken ads out in local newspapers criticizing Google, they have made the "Gmail Man" video public.

Apple now no. 3 in global smartphone sales

IDC has released new global smartphone market share numbers and Apple is now number 3 worldwide. According to IDC, Nokia is still number one, and Samsung is number two. The iPhone 4S obviously helped Apple take the number 3 slot.

New RIM board chair promises more changes to revive BlackBerry

Newly appointed board chair Barbara Stymiest has promised more changes to RIM's board will come. In an effort to shake things up RIM's co-founders stepped down as co-ceos, but still remain on the board. That drew criticism from some investors and Stymiest is obviously trying to ease their concerns.
Stymiest is still reviewing the composition of the board, and said in an interview that adding India-born investor Prem Watsa has already brought a "key understanding of Asian markets to RIM’s leadership."

Samsung mystery ICS phone press photo leaked on Twitter

This press photo was leaked on Twitter by industry insider Eldar Murtazin. It is a Samsung phone running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, that will be announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month. The phone is believed to be a new device, but NOT the Samsung Galaxy S III because Samsung says the S III will appear after MWC.

RIM has released a couple of new commercials as part of the "Be Bold" campaign. The ads feature normal people in every day life situations, using their BlackBerry Bold. In the video above you'll notice one of the guys says, "we need tools, not toys." That's clearly a stab at the iPhone who BlackBerry wants to suggest is not serious enough of a tool for work.
