Do you have a 2011 MacBook Pro? Do you notice your screen flickering randomly? Me too. It turns out there is an issue with the 2011 MBP’s that cause the screen to flicker whenever the computer switches from integrated to discrete video mode, and vice versa.
Switching video modes is apparently used to save power, but it has a whole lot of issues. I first noticed it after my logic board was replaced by Apple’s repair depot. I had not had the problem before, but I noticed it immediately. I got in touch with the Apple tech who had helped me with the repair. I shot a video of the problem and he sent it to the Apple engineers and got an interesting response. “The computer is working within the tolerance of how the computer was intended to run.” Huh? That’s what they told me. In other words, that’s a bug that we have no intention of addressing because your Mac is 2 years old.
Also on the 2011 MacBook Pro is an issue with FileVault 2. If your hard drive is encrypted and you launch iPhoto, expect your screen to turn blue. This is a very frustrating issue that Apple never addressed, and never answered. There are a lot of complaints about it in Apple’s Discussion Forums, but no answer for Apple. Check out this video to see a sample of the problem.
If you’re looking for a fix for these issues you are simply out of luck. I got escalated up the Apple chain, but the response has been zilch! Thanks Apple. I only spent $3800 on this computer.
