Spb Mobile Shell Review

Today Screen
The Today Screen plugin that is included with Spb Mobile Shell is fantastic. Spb has found a way to maximize the screen space needed for their plugin. They have introduced a tabbed interface that allows you to have multiple features while taking up minimal screen real estate. Thank goodness! I just hate it when the scroll bars come up on my Treo.

The four main tabs in the Today Screen plugin give quick access to five speed dial options, a program launcher, world clock, and weather forecast. The tabs can be moved into the order you wish them to be in, and some of them can be edited as well. That's a nice touch and an easy way to check your batter on the fly.

Along with the features that come up once you hit a tab, the tabs themselves show you information that you need. The Home Tab which is used for launching programs, gives you a battery level icon as the tab icon. The icon for the world clock displays the actual time (not just a static picture of a clock). The Weather icon gives you a synopsis of the weather.

The only complaint I have is the lack of keyboard support for getting action menus on the speed dials. If I hold my stylus on a contact picture a menu pops up asking me if I want to call or send a text message, etc. I cannot seem to get that same menu with any keystroke. Adding that feature is my suggestion for the next version of Spb Mobile Shell because it would help with the Treo. With a full blown Pocket PC Phone that does not include a QWERTY keyboard, this feature is not really necessary and that's probably why they left it out.
